Sakhalin International School is a Shell affiliated school teaching the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). It has achieved Mastering Level which is the highest attainable.

Situated within Zima Highlands camp, Sakhalin International School is a friendly and caring international learning community in which everyone is valued and included. Children are happy to come to school, are well motivated learners and treat each other thoughtfully and with respect.

Children aged between 2–3 years old may attend the Playgroup, located in the Sakhalin International School in Zima, for two morning sessions and one afternoon session per week.  This is run by English speaking Russian teachers and also accepts Russian speaking children. 


There are several Russian kindergartens open to foreigners in Yuzhno. They are only offered in the Russian language. The kindergartens typically include a full-day programme including a cooked lunch and afternoon nap. However, some directors are willing for children to come for half days. Fees are approximately US$ 100 per month. Depending on the school, they usually take infants through to children entering school and the children are divided into groups by age. Commuting times to such schools can be long and very difficult during the winter, when the roads may be closed due to bad weather conditions.

Sakhalin International School follows the English curriculum for Literacy and Maths and the International Primary Curriculum ( for all other subjects in Primary, and the International Middle Years Curriculum ( in Middle Years.

In 2015, the school was again accredited at the level of Mastering in the quality of the learning it offered through the IPC.  This status will be reviewed again in 2019.

The facility offers learning for the following age groups:

Aged 2-3 years Playgroup twice a week
Aged 3 years Pre-Nursery 5 mornings a week from 08:30 - 11.50

Aged 4/5 years

Nursery and P1 children, 5 mornings a week, 08:30 - 11:50 and 4 afternoons a week, 13:00 - 15:10. Children in these classes do not attend school on Wednesday afternoon

P2-P7 (5-11 yrs) 08:30 – 12:00 and 13:00 - 15:10, Monday-Friday
M1-M2 (11-13 yrs) 08:30 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 15:10 Monday - Friday

There are local Russian schools in Yuzhno, that follow a local syllabus, and the language for teaching and learning is Russian. The schools are heavily over-subscribed, so it can be difficult to get a place.
